Discover Horton Plains National Park: Sri Lanka’s Misty Wonderland

Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka’s central highlands, Horton Plains National Park is a mystical plateau of cloud forests, sweeping grasslands, and rare wildlife. Located at an elevation of over 2,000 meters above sea level, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a unique ecological experience, attracting nature lovers, hikers, and bird watchers alike.

Why Visit Horton Plains?

  • Scenic Trails & Iconic Views: The main 9.5 km circular trail leads to breathtaking landmarks like World’s End, a sheer cliff with a dramatic 870-meter drop, and Baker’s Falls, a stunning waterfall hidden within lush foliage.

  • Unique Biodiversity: The park is home to several endemic species including the Sri Lankan sambar deer, purple-faced langur, and rare bird species like the Sri Lanka whistling thrush.

  • Cool Climate: Its cool and misty climate provides a refreshing contrast to Sri Lanka’s tropical lowlands—ideal for early morning hikes and nature photography.

Practical Information

  • Best Time to Visit: December to April offers the clearest skies and best views. Morning visits (before 10 AM) are recommended to avoid fog at World’s End.

  • Getting There: Horton Plains is about 30 km from Nuwara Eliya and is best accessed via a private vehicle or guided tour. The entrance is near the town of Ohiya, which is also connected by train.

  • Park Hours & Fees: Open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Entrance fees apply for both locals and foreigners.
